POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS WERE HELD BETWEEN THE MINISTRIES OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF TURKMENISTAN AND GEORGIA

On October 9, 2020, political consultations were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and Georgia in the format of a video conference.

The Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev, and the Georgian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Alexander Khvtisiashvili.

During the consultations, the parties discussed a number of topical issues on the bilateral and regional agendas. An exchange of views took place on the current state of the Turkmen-Georgian relations and the prospects for cooperation in the political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian fields.

It was especially noted that high-level contacts are of paramount importance in promoting interstate relations. In this context, the parties expressed mutual interest in organizing such contacts whenever possible.

The effectiveness of cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries was emphasized. The parties agreed to continue an active dialogue, including joint development of cooperation programs for the coming period. The issues of expanding the juridical base of bilateral interaction were considered.

The colleagues noted the effectiveness of the partnership within the framework of international structures, mainly in the UN. The similarity of positions in promoting international cooperation to achieve peace, security and sustainable development in the region and in the world was confirmed. In this context, the parties discussed the situation in the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The position of Turkmenistan, calling for the use of methods of preventive diplomacy under the auspices of the UN and with the development of appropriate political mechanisms and formats with the participation of the countries of the Central Asian region, is stated.

During the consultations, the level of trade and economic cooperation between Turkmenistan and Georgia, which slowed down slightly due to the global pandemic, was also considered. The parties noted the need to intensify the meetings of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Georgian Commission on Economic Cooperation, which contribute to strengthening partnerships in trade, industry and investment.

Touching upon the issues of cooperation in the field of energy and transport, the parties expressed satisfaction with the promotion of joint projects and agreements. The successful functioning of the "Lapis Lazuli" corridor designed to have a favorable impact on the development of trade and economic relations between the countries of Asia and Europe was noted. In this context, proposals were voiced to deepen cooperation with the use of seaports, the introduction of advanced technologies in the system of cargo transportation, and the simplification of customs and tariff regulation.

Colleagues also discussed cultural and humanitarian interaction. The parties paid special attention to the issues of education and science. The possibilities of expanding intercultural dialogue by creating a special mechanism were considered.

At the end of the meeting, the sides expressed the commitment of the two states to further expand the friendly Turkmen-Georgian relations. The consultations took place in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.
